The 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence brought together Rome’s Ukrainian community, associations, families and Italian friends for two days dedicated to freedom, remembrance and solidarity.
On 23 August 2026, a march organised by the Christian Association of Ukrainians in Italy together with the Embassy of Ukraine in Italy passed through central Rome, reaching the Imperial Forums area near the Colosseum. Ukrainian flags, songs and messages of support accompanied the participants.
A memorial prayer and a minute’s silence honoured those who had fallen defending Ukraine. The gathering also drew attention to the release of prisoners of war and support for their families.
On 24 August, the commemorations continued outside the Colosseum, illuminated in blue and yellow. The community gathered to sing Ukraine’s national anthem, honour fallen defenders and express solidarity with Ukraine.
At UCI Zonale di Roma, we value these opportunities to come together. They strengthen community ties, preserve shared memory and encourage dialogue between the Ukrainian community and Italian society.
We thank Oles Horodetskyy, the Christian Association of Ukrainians in Italy, the Embassy of Ukraine in Italy, the volunteers and everyone who contributed to these events. We also thank the communities who travelled from other cities and the Italian friends who continue to stand with Ukraine.
Our wish is for a free and independent Ukraine, with a just and lasting peace.
